Eagle Eye University | Battery Data Analysis Course

Eagle Eye University offers a variety of classes throughout the year in battery management, maintenance and testing, data analysis, safety and IEEE recommended best practices. Our students obtain hands on training in each of our courses and receive a certification upon completion. The courses are located at our headquarters in Milwaukee, WI.

Our next course is September 7-8th and will be on battery data analysis. This course will outline each of the steps required to prepare and carry out a discharge test in accordance with IEEE recommended practices. It will include hands on training during which both a constant power capacity discharge and a service discharge using a typical substation load profile will be carried out.

This two-day course will be split up by measurable battery parameters and data analytics. During the first day, the students will learn the importance of discharge testing and the discharge test types. They will discuss operational requirements and perform an initial battery condition assessment, test set up, and discharge test. To end the first day, they will begin learning about data analysis. The second day of the course will continue data analysis, and they will work together to carry out a capacity and service test. Before each hands on test, the stude
nts will be given the load bank to be used for that test. After the tests, the students will calculate the battery capacity based on the results.

Attendees in different industries will leave with a better understanding of battery discharge testing and analysis. Importance of Electrolyte Level Monitors Being NERC PRC-005-2 Compliant

One of the most critical roles of utility companies is to ensure the health and protection of their Bulk Electric System (BES). Without proper battery testing and preventative maintenance, the Bulk Electric System is compromised. As a result, utility companies can suffer from significant revenue loss, possible safety hazards for their workers and more. To ensure the negative effects of a compromised system won’t occur, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has been formed to enforce the reliability standards of all battery monitoring and testing equipment. In addition, NERC PRC-005-2 requires utilities worldwide to document and implement programs for the maintenance of all protection systems affecting the reliability of the BES.

To comply with NERC PRC-005-2 guidelines, Eagle Eye has created the ELM- Series Battery Electrolyte Level Monitor for power utilities nationwide. The ELM is a reliable dual sensor system that monitors the electrolyte level and temperature of individual flooded batteries.  The ELM-Series utilizes low-cost, easy to install sensors that will send out an alarm on low electrolyte level, or higher than normal temperature. VIPER Ride Charity Receives Donations from Eagle Eye

Milwaukee, Wisconsin- On Wednesday, June 8^th, Eagle Eye Power Solutions presented a $500 check towards the VIPER Ride charity organization. The check was presented at the House of Harley motorcycle dealership at 6221 W. Layton Ave. in Greenfield, Wisconsin. Dave Carlson, Finance Commander and Nellie Oman, Finance Co-Chair (both pictured above) were able to accept the donation on behalf of their organization.

The word “VIPER” in their organization, stands for Visually Impaired Patriots Experiencing the Road. There are over 132,000 blind veterans across the globe. 22 out of those 132,000 veterans commit suicide every day from depression, as a result of their feelings of isolation from being blind. The VIPER Ride aims to provide those veterans with an opportunity to go on 100+ mile motorcycle rides on Wisconsin’s best cycling roads. The event will bring excitement, joy and liveliness back to the veterans and bring awareness to their cause. Throughout the event, there will be rest stops filled with refreshments and a social event that includes meals and entertainment, sure to be fun for the whole family!

How Protected are your Battery Rooms?

Hydrogen Gas Detector with Smoke Detection, Loss of Power, Temperature and Intrusion Alarms! 

Eagle Eye Power Solutions is introducing the HGD-3000 Hydrogen Gas Detector – the ultimate fixed hydrogen gas detector for any battery room. The HGD-3000 protects from hydrogen gas buildup while detecting smoke, temperature, loss of power and intrusion.

The HGD-3000 was designed for unattended battery installations or remote shelters containing gassing lead acid batteries and charging systems - most commonly found in the telecommunications and utility sectors. Other applications for hydrogen gas detection include forklift and golf cart charging areas, data centers, mission critical facilities, fire departments, and other battery charging rooms.

The HGD-3000 Has Three Main Functions: 

Hydrogen Gas Detection

Attach the HGD-3000 to the wall, ceiling, or optional junction box using the mounting holes at the top and bottom of the detector box. The HGD-3000 will turn on an exhaust fan when hydrogen gas levels reach 1% and will alarm at 2%. This alarm consists of a local 80db horn, a flashing red LED, and a dry contact switch closure for remote alarming.

Smoke Detection

The photoelectric smoke sensor detects minute combustion products from smoldering wire insulation, battery cases, and other material. When smoke is detected, a distinctive alarm is emitted from the 80db horn and a separate dry contact switch is activated. At this time, the exhaust fan is inhibited in order to deny the fire increased oxygen from outside air.

Temperature, Loss of Power, & Intrusion

During normal operation and in the absence of an alarm condition, an internal thermostat will turn on the exhaust fan at a preset temperature to reduce heat buildup in the room. Loss of power to the unit will also generate a dry contact alarm. Additionally, an optional infrared intrusion alarm will trigger a silent dry contact switch.

Lead-acid batteries on charge emit hydrogen gas after reaching the 80% recharge point. When mixed with enough air, hydrogen becomes a highly flammable gas that can ignite easily with just a spark, destroying equipment and harming personnel. The lower explosive level (LEL) for hydrogen is 4.1% by volume. The dangers of hydrogen gas explosion are eliminated by using the HGD-3000 hydrogen gas detector.

Eagle Eye Power Solutions is introducing the ELM-Series Electrolyte Level Monitoring System that monitors the electrolyte level and temperature of individual flooded batteries The ELM-Series is non-invasive and is applicable to any flooded battery regardless of voltage and amp-hour. Save time and money by continuously monitoring electrolyte levels and eliminating the need for periodic testing and battery maintenance!

How does the ELM-Series Work?  

The ELM-Series Battery Electrolyte Level Monitor will work for any flooded battery system. Each model will include (1) ELM-Monitor and as many sensors required to connect to each jar / cell. (ex: A 60 Cell system will have 60 Sensors and 1 Monitor). Utilizing low-cost, easy-to-install sensors, the system will alarm on low electrolyte level or higher than normal temperature. The sensors are simply and securely attached to each individual jar.

In the condition of a low electrolyte or temperature alarm, the sensors communicate to the system monitor and the system monitor activates a changeover relay output while simultaneously activating the appropriate alarm LED lights. The LED light will indicate either 'low electrolyte level' or 'jar over-temperature'. In the event that 4 or more jars fall to an alarm level, the monitor will trigger a group alarm in addition to the single jar alarm.

The IBEX-Ultra is the premier kit in the IBEX-Series, capable of storing 4,800 measurement results and 80 alarm settings. The IBEX-EX is the most economic portable battery tester in the IBEX-Series. The IBEX-EX tests Voltage, Internal Resistance, Inter-cell Resistance, and (optional) temperature, and includes Serial Comm which is a program for transferring results from the IBEX to Microsoft Excel for basic reporting.

A ground fault is an unintentional electrical path between a power source and a grounded service, and can occur at any time. They often occur when equipment is damaged or defective. The Eagle Eye GFL-1000 pinpoints ground faults by accurately measuring grounding resistance and distributing capacitance. The SG-100M specific gravity meter / liquid density monitor has an in-tank, drop-hang submersible probe that measures, monitors, records and controls specific gravity/liquid density. The unit allows for customer customization to meet exact testing requirements.

 The SG-100M measurement probe can be used independently or integrated into an existing PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).  An optional 4-20mA analog output board is often used with the SG-100M for automatic process control.
